6.26 - Addition reactions of alkenes Flashcards
What is an addition reaction?
When two molecules combine to form one molecule
What feature of alkenes allows them to undergo addition reactions?
Their double bond
Why?
Because the double bond can become a single bond and allow two more groups to attach to the newly formed alkane
What happens when bromine reacts with ethene?
1,2-dibromoethane is formed
What is observed during this reaction?
There is a colour change from orange to colourless
What is hydrogenation?
The addition of hydrogen to a molecule
When an alkene is hydrogenised, what is formed?
An alkane with the same length carbon chain
What are the conditions for the hydrogenation of ethene?
Heat and a nickel catalyst
What is halogenation?
The addition of a halogen molecule to an alkene
What will be formed?
A halogenoalkane
What is a hydration reaction?
Adding water to a molecule
What is formed?
An alcohol, as a hydrogen atom and OH group are added, and -OH is the funtional group of alcohols
What catalyst is required?
Phosphoric acid
What is a diol?
A compound containing two OH groups
How are diols formed?
By adding water and an oxidising agent to an alkene
