62. MENINGES OF THE SPINAL CORD Flashcards
What are the meninges of the spinal cord?
The meninges are covering shields over the central nervous system, the spinal cord. They provide support and cushioning and also have a channel for blood vessels and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
What is the dura mater?
The dura mater is the outside, dense, and fibrous layer. It is composed of firm connective tissue and protects the spinal cord from physical injury.
Where is the dura mater anchored?
The dura mater is anchored at the foramen magnum on the vertebral column and travels down to the sacral region.
What is the arachnoid mater?
The arachnoid mater is the second membrane under the dura mater, a web-like membrane.
What is the pia mater?
The pia mater is the most inner layer, in direct contact with the surface of the spinal cord. It is a thin, membranous layer that takes the form of the cord.
What does the pia mater contain?
The pia mater contains blood vessels to supply the spinal cord.
What are the key functions of the dura mater?
The dura mater provides structural support.
What are the key functions of the arachnoid mater?
The arachnoid mater creates a fluid space (subarachnoid space) for CSF to pass through and suspend the cord.
What are the key functions of the pia mater?
The pia mater’s key function is the closest proximity to the spinal cord and the supply of nutrients.
