6.2: Global Energy Consumption Flashcards
Nations and energy use
Developed nations use more energy per capita, but developing nations use more energy total (higher population)
Most common fuel source globally and what each type is used for
Fossil fuels;
* Oil = gasoline = main fuel for vehicles
* Coal= main fuel for electricity generation
* Nat. gas = secondary fuel for electricity gen & main fuel for heating
Second largest fuel source
Water and electricity
Hydroelectic; water spins a turbine which generates electricity
Electricity generation
- Fossil fuel is burned to produce heat
- Heat is used to boil water to steam
- Steam powers and spins turbine
- Turbine powers a generator
- Generator produces electricity
Third largest fuel source
Fission and electricity
Nuclear; uranium fission releases heat to turn water into steam to turn a turbine to generate electricity
Developing nations fuel
Examples of fuel
They depend on subsistence fuels (biomass) that can easily be gathered pr purchased
* Wood, charcoal, dried animal manure.
Econ. dev to energy use
Econ. development to affluence to higher per capita GDP to energy use
Fracking and availability of fossil fuels
opens new Natural Gas reserves which increases availability, decreases price, and increases use
What can the government do?
They can either use taxes to discourage companies from building fossil fuel plants or offer a rebate/subsidy to encourage companies to build renewable energy power plants
