5.14: Integrated Pest Management Flashcards
Biological controls
Introduction of natural predator like praying mantis eating crickets
Physical controls
A barrier of some sort to protect crops like a plant or weed block or straight up yanking them
Chemical controls
Poisons that kill pest species such as DDT, Atrazine
Crop Rotation
Switching planted crops per whatever time frame like planting corn for 3 years before switching to broccoli before switching to corn again. Pests won’t accumulate in as large of numbers that would warrant pesticide use.
Inter-cropping
Planting a different crop each row; Pests won’t accumulate in as large of numbers that would warrant pesticide use.
What harm do chemical pesticides cause?
Target non-target wildlife, water supplies, human health
3 benefits of IPM
- Decreases amount of chemical pesticides used
- More targeted
- Minimizes loss of beneficial species
3 Drawbacks of IPM
- Complex
- Slow
- Expensive
