6.1 Tropical Rainforest Flashcards
1
Q
Where are the main areas of TRF
A
- Amazon basin (Brazil)
- Central Africa
- South East Asia
2
Q
What is the climate like in the TRF
A
because TRFs are on or close to the Equator, climate is warm and wet
3
Q
What are the soils of the TRF like
A
- thin and poor
- luscious vegetation because of the rapid recycling of nutrients
- most nutrients are in the biomass and the litter
4
Q
Biomass def
A
All living things in the ecosystem, both plants and animals
5
Q
Litter def
A
Dead organic matter such as fallen leaves or tree trunks and dead animals
6
Q
How are the components of the TRF interdependent?
A
- nutrients fall to the ground when plants and animals die
- nutrients become part of the soil when DOM decomposes
- plants take up nutrients which are dissolved in soil
7
Q
Are TRFs high in biodiversity
A
- yes
- it is higher than in any other biome
- 2/3 of the world’s plants and 1/2 of the world’s known animal species are in the TRF
8
Q
Outline one reason for distribution of tropical rainforest
A
Found along equator, making rainforests have high humidity
