Q

Describe process of carbon capture and storage

A

It captures carbon dioxide from emissions sourcces and storing it in an impermeable ‘cap rock’ to prevent it escaping

An advantage is that it could also be a source of electricity in the future. It could also mitigate for 10-50% of the world’s carbon emissions up until 2100

A disadvantage is that it is unclear if it could escape from storage in the long term and if it will pollute groundwater supplies

Q

Explain the use of alternative energy production

A

2013 - 14.9% UK electricity by renewable sources mostly used by NEE’s

Disadvantages: Expensive, solar can’t be relied on at night

Q

Explain the use of international agreements

A

2015 - Paris Climate Conference
Agreed to reduce levels of CO2 by 60% by 2050.

Disadvantages: Some countries can afford to mitigate more than others

Q

Explain how change in managing water supply in UK will help climate change

A
  • Reducing demand, 2030 all London homes to have retrofit package of water-efficient devices
  • Increasing supply, desalination of salt water in Thames to provide more drinking water for 400,000 homes

Q

Explain how change in reducing risk from sea levels rising will help climate change

A
  • 1982 Thames Barrier to stop tidal surges
  • A 50cm rise in sea level could compromise the ability to protect less people

Q

Describe how greenhouse gas emissions from energy production could be reduced

A
  • using renewable energy sources such as solar power to prevent the amount of carbon released
  • Carbon capture - capturing CO2 from emission sources store them away in impermeable rock as well as removing it from the atmosphere
