6.1 DNA Flashcards
Describe the nucleotide
A molecule consisting of a nitrogen-containing base (adenine guanine thymine or cytosine in DNA adenine, guanine uracil or cytosine in RNA) a phosphate group and a sugar (deoxyribose in DNA ribose in RNA).
What is the ribonucleic structure
It is made up of nucleotides, which are ribose sugars attached to nitrogenous bases and phosphate groups.
(adenine guanine uracil cytosine)
What is mRNA and its structur
single-stranded molecules in cells that transfer genetic information from the DNA in the nucleus to the cytoplasm where proteins are synthesized in the ribosomes.
What is the structure of adenosine trisphosphate (ATP)
nucleoside triphosphate consisting of a nitrogenous base (adenine) a ribose sugar and three serially bonded phosphate groups
Describe the term double helix 5’-3 and 3’-5’
Each end of DNA molecule has a number. One end is referred to as 5’ (five prime) and the other end is referred to as 3’ (three prime)
describe the process of semiconservative replication of DNA
This process is known as semi-conservative replication because two copies of the original DNA molecule are produced, each copy conserving the information from one half of the original DNA molecule
