First for control of sicily and western Mediterranean lasted 23 years. Carthage defeated. Second punic war against military strategist Hannibal who wanted to avenge Carthages earlier defeat. Assembled 50,000 infantry, 9,000 calvary, and 60 elephants. Led army through spain france and alps. At Cannae carthage won. Third punic war rome won a general named Scorpio devised plan of attack at Zama. Carthage was set afire and it's 50,000 inhabitants sold into slavery. Made a roman province.
