Slow down and prepare to stop

What makes children particularly vulnerable road users?
They are unpredictable
What should you be alert to in school areas?
Children and school crossing patrol. Reduce your speed through these areas.
Why shouldn’t you park on zig-zag yellow lines outside schools?
Drivers on the road and pedestrians on the pavement need a clear view of the crossing area outside a school
How might you know a bus has children on board?
It will be signed, they may stop frequently without bus stops
Why must you be particularly patient if an older or disabled person is crossing the road ahead of you?
They may misjudge your speed and take longer to cross than you take to approach (be patient)
How may a pedestrian with hearing difficulties make themselves visible?
Wearing a yellow or burgundy coloured vest
What may it suggest if a person has a stick with a red band or is walking a dog with a red-and-white checked harness?
They are deaf and blind
What makes cyclists more vulnerable than cars?
They follow the same rules and routes (typically) but are slower and more exposed
What is the purpose of advanced stop lines?
Allow cyclists room to stop, cars should stop at the first white line
Why may a cyclist swerve?
To avoid a drain/ pothole
If affected by wind
What may indicate that a cyclist plans to turn right?
Going slowly or glancing over their shoulder, stay behind and give them plenty of room
When should you never overtake a cyclist (or moped)?
Before a left turn
When should you be particularly weary of cyclists?
When emerging from a junction and at roundabouts
What should you be aware of in queuing traffic (apropos motorcycles)?
They may filter between lanes

Slow-moving vehicle. Powered vehicles used by disabled people must have this if travelling on dual carriageway
What is the first thing you must do after a collision?
Stop, by law, if there is any damage or injury to other people, vehicles, animals or property
What should you do if you are being dazzled by the cars behind?
Set interior mirror to a anti-dazzle. Stop and slow down if you cannot see.
