What should you do if a dashboard warning light comes on whilst driving?
Stop as soon as it is safe and investigate
What should you do if you get a puncture or a tyre bursts whilst driving?
Hold the wheel firm and stop as soon as possible.
What should you do if you breakdown on the motorway?
Try and get to the next service area or move into the left hand lane and then the emergency area or hard shoulder
Where on the hard shoulder should you stop?
Just beyond an emergency phone and as far left as possible
What should you do if you cannot exit your broken down vehicle?
Call 999 and ask for police or press an SOS button if your vehicle has one
What should you do if you break down on a level crossing?
Get everyone out of the vehicle quickly and use the emergency phones provided
Do not move your vehicle until the operator tells you it is safe to do so
What should you do before driving through a tunnel?
Remove sunglasses and switch on dipped headligjts
What should you do f your vehicle or one in front breaks down in a tunnel?
Switch off the engine
Switch hazard lights on
Immediately call for help with the nearest emergency phone
What should you do if you rehicle catches fire within a tunnel?
- Drive it out of the tunnel
- If you cannot then:
- stop
- switch hazard lights on
- if the fire is small try and put it out
- call for help at the nearest emergency point (BUT LIKE ASAP?!)
When should you use a warning light?
If you have broken down, about 45m behind your vehicle but NEVER on the motorway
What should you do if you are the first to arrive at an incident?
Put your hazard lights on and do not put yourself at risk
Make sure emergency services have been called
Ensure all engines are off
Move uninjured people away from the scene
What should you do if a vehicle labelled as carrying dangerous goods is involved in an incident?
Report the information shown on the plates to the emergency services
What should you do if there are injured people at an incident?
Call 999 or 112
Keep them warm and comfortable
Keep them calm, talk to them and reassure them
Make sure they are not left alone
Only move them if they are in extreme danger
If a motorcyclist is involved and is wearing a helmet do not remove this unless necessary to keep them alive
Never offer anyone food, drinks or cigarettes
What should you do if there is an unconscious casualty?
Check they can breathe normally and put them in recovery position keeping their airways clear
What is the protocol for providing emergency care?
DR ABC
Danger - is it safe to approach?
Response - are they responsive?
Airway - if there is no response open airways by placing fingers under their chin and lifting forwards
Breathing - Check they are breathing normally, if they are not initiate CPR
Circulation - if the casualty is responsive and breathing check for signs of bleeding. Put pressure on wounds if they are not plugged
