16
Q

Why may you want to give an arm signal in bright sunlight?

A

Other drivers may not see your indicator lights

17
Q

Who may be effected by high winds?

A

High sided vehicles, motorists and cyclists may be blown off course, allow extra wide birth

18
Q

What is the main cause of skidding?

A

Bad driving

19
Q

When is the risk of skidding greatest?

A

Wet/ icy weather

20
Q

How do you identify black ice?

A

When the steering feels light

21
Q

How can we decrease the risk of skidding and wheelspin in wet/ icy weather?

A

Drive at low speed in a high gear and react to hazards with plenty of time

22
Q

What should you do if you start skidding?

A

Release the foot break and re-apply gently (of you do not have ABS)
Steer smoothly in the direction of the skid
If you have ABS apply the footbrake rapidly and firmly until you’ve stopped

23
Q

Does ABS decrease stopping distance?

A

Not necessarily, only allows steering whilst braking

24
Q

When may ABS not work?

A

Where there is surface water
Where there is a loose road surface

25
Q

What is ESC?

A

Electronic stability control comprises the function of ABS and traction control systems and aims to prevent a vehicle skidding sideways by detecting risk of skid and providing selective braking intervention to restore vehicle stability.
This is now fitted in all new UK vehicles

26
Q

Describe a contraflow system

A

When a dual carriageway is split into a two way system when one direction is closed

27
Q

What should you remember in a contraflow system?

A

Reduce speed
Choose appropriate lane in good time
Maintain correct separation distance

28
Q

What can I do to stop my vehicle rolling downhill when parked?

A

Turn the wheel towards the kerb

29
Q

What are the benefits of a four-wheeled drive vehicle?

A

Improved road holding on different road surfaces

30
Q

Where should you not overtake?

A

When view is blocked
When approaching a junction
If intending to turn off the road shortly
