6. Psychological Explanation For Schizophrenia AO3 Flashcards
Name a strength for psychological explanations
Support for different information processing - Stirling et al
What did Stirling et al do
Compare to 30 patients with schizophrenia to 18 non-patients in a control group on cognitive tasks
What did Stirling et al find
Patients took over twice as long as the control group to suppress the impulse to read the word and to name that in colour instead - supports theory of central control dysfunction - evidence show that processing differs in SZ patients
Name a limitation for psychological explanations
Evidence for family relationships is often retrospective - Read et al
What did Read et al study
Reviewed at 46 studies and concluded that 69% of all adult female inpatients with schizophrenia had a history of physical or sexual abuse in childhood
Why does Read et alโs research create an issue
Most of the evidence is based on information about childhood experience gathered long after diagnosis - symptoms may have distorted the patient recall of the childhood experiences - creates problem with validity
