Measurement
The process of creating measurable concrete variables from abstract concepts, Extends the senses (empirical), qualitative
Reliability
The consistency or dependency of a measure, Does the measure consistently give the same results?
Validity
Truthfulness of a measure, Is it measuring what the researcher thinks it is measuring
Face Validity
Easiest to achieve, a judgement by the scientific community that the indicator really measures the construct
Content Validity
Is the full content of a definition represented in a measure?
Criterion Validity
Uses some standard or criterion to indicate a construct accurately
Concurrent Validity
an indicator must be associated with preexisting indicators that were judged to be valid
Predictive Validity
Can the results predict future, ex. The LSAT used to predict future success in law school
Scales
Vary in intensity from lowest to highest, usually a single question
Mutually Exclusive
Respondents shouldn’t fit into more than one category for a questions
Exhaustive
Answer categories should list all options and not list anyone out
