1, Intro to Social Research Flashcards
Overgeneralization
When some evidence supports a belief and a person falsely assumes that it applies to many other situations
Selective Observation
The tendency to take notice of certain people or groups based on past experience or attitude
Premature Closure
When a person feels he/she has the answers and doesn’t need to listen/seek info/ raise questions any longer
Halo effect
When a person overgeneralizes from a person/info source that they deem to be highly prestigious/positive, trust info from the more without good cause
Sensory Verification
Must be observable with the 5 senses
Deductive Structure
top down, theory-> hypothesis-> test hypothesis
Inductive Structure
bottom-up, qualitative
Verifiable
able to be replicated with other studies
Intersubjective Agreement
peer reviewed, agreed upon by peers, other studies
Goals of science
Provide method to understand causality and to predict
Causality, Association
The co-occurrence of two events, such that when one happens the other is likely to as well
Time Order
Cause followed by outcome, when future predicting of outcomes drives our behaviour
Non-spuriousness
No alternative explanation, correlation is not causation
Theoretical Justification
Other studies to prove non-spuriousness
Quantitative
date easily manipulated statistically, #’s
