(6) Magnetism and electromagnetism Flashcards
What are the strongest parts of a magnet?
It’s poles
What is the difference between magnetically hard and soft materials?
Magnetically hard materials don’t loose their magnetism, whereas magnetically soft materials tend to easily loose their magnetism.
What is a magnetic field?
A volume of space around a magnet where we can detect magnetism.
What do magnetic field lines show?
1) The strength of a magnetic field.
2) The direction of the magnetic force.
3) The shape of the magnetic field.
What is induced magnetism?
When we place a magnetic material inside a magnetic field it becomes a magnet, this is induced magnetism.
What is electromagnetism?
When there is a current in a wire, there is a magnetic field around it. This is called electromagnetism.
What does the right hand grip rule show?
The thumb points to the direction of the current and the other fingers point to the direction of the magnetic field.
How can we increase the strength of the magnetic field?
- By increasing the current.
- By wrapping the wire into a solenoid.
How can we increase the strength of a field around a solenoid?
- By increasing the current.
- By increasing the number of turns on the solenoid.
- Wrapping the solenoid around a soft iron core.
