(2) Current and voltage in ciruits Flashcards
What is an electric current?
It is a flow of charge.
What does an ammeter do?
Measure the size of the current in the circuit.
What is electric charge measured in?
Coulombs (C)
What is the formula for charge?
Charge= Time x Current
What is the formula for energy transferred?
Energy transferred= Charge x Voltage
What does a voltmeter do?
Measure the size of the voltage in a circuit.
How are ammeters and voltmeters connected in a circuit?
Ammeters are connected in series and voltmeters are connected in parallel.
What are the two main types of circuits?
Series and parallel.
What are the features of series circuits?
- One switch placed anywhere can turn the whole circuit on or off.
- If any one component breaks the whole circuit stops working.
- The energy shared between bulbs is shared, so the more you add the less bright they become.
What are the features of parallel circuits?
- Switches can be place in different parts of the circuit and switch each bulb on and off individually.
- If one bulb breaks, only the bulbs in that branch of the circuit will break.
- Each branch receives the same voltage, so adding more bulbs wont affect the brightness of the bulb.
In series circuits the current is…?
The same in all parts, it is not used up.
In parallel circuits the current is…?
Not the same.
