(1) Forces and shape Flashcards
What is the unit used to measure forces?
Newtons (N)
When the forces acting on something are balanced…?
The object does not change the way it’s moving.
When the forces acting on something are unbalanced…?
The object changes the way it’s moving.
What is friction?
Friction is the force that causes moving objects to slow down and stop moving.
When/where does friction occur?
When two solids move against each other, and when an object moves through a fluid.
What is an elastic material?
A material that does not easily break and returns to it’s original shape when the force acting on it is removed.
What happens to a spring when you apply a force to it?
It’s length changes (depending on the force) and it returns back to it’s original length when the force is removed. However, the spring may not go to it’s original shape if it reaches it’s elastic limit.
What is Hooke’s law?
Hooke’s law states that the extension of a spring is proportional to the force applied to it.
