6. Investigating Resonance Flashcards
What factors affect resonance Frequency?
Length, Mass per unit length and tension
How does Length affect Resonant Frequency?
The longer the string, the lower the resonant frequency, this is because doing this increases the wavelength, this can be seen in the equation as c = fλ, and as c is constant and λ is increased, f will decrease.
How does an increase in Mass Per Unit Length affect the Resonant Frequency
The greater the Mass per unit length, the lower the resonant frequency, this is because waves travel more slowly down the string, and as λ is constant, and c is decreasing, f will also decrease.
How does decreasing the Tension in the string affect the resonant frequency?
decreasing the tension decreases the resonant frequency, this is because waves travel more slowly down a loose string.
How can you calculate the resonant frequency?
The frequency in Hz can be calculated by multiplying 1/(2*length) by the square root of tension divided by mass per unit length.
