4. Superposition and Interface Flashcards
What is Superposition?
Superposition is the process that occurs when two or more waves pass through each other, increasing, or decreasing the displacement of the wave.
What are the conditions for superposition?
The waves have to be of the same type and be Coherent.
What does it mean for a wave to be Coherent with another?
They must have the same frequency and a constant phase difference.
What are the two types of interference which can occur from superposition?
Constructive and Destructive interference
What is Constructive Interference?
Constructive interference is what occurs if their displacements are in the same direction, it causes the displacements to combine to give a bigger displacement, so a crest would get higher, while a trough would get deeper
What is Destructive Interference?
Destructive Interference is what occurs if their displacements are in opposite directions, it causes the displacements to combine to give a smaller displacement, so a crest/trough would flatten out.
What is Total Destructive Interference?
Total Destructive Interference Occurs when two waves of equal and Opposite displacements meet, they cancel each other out completely.
