3. Transverse and Longitudinal Waves Flashcards
What is a Transverse wave?
A transverse wave is a wave that displaces particles at right angles to the direction of energy propagation
What is a Longitudinal wave?
A longitudinal wave is where the wave that displaces particles along the direction of energy propagation
What is a Polarised wave?
A polarised wave is a wave that is only travelling in a certain direction
What causes a polarised wave to form?
putting a wave through a polarising filter will make a polarised wave
What waves can become Polarised waves?
Only Transverse waves can be polarised
What waves are known as Transverse waves?
Electromagnetic waves, Water Waves, Waves on a string & S-waves
What waves are known as longitudinal waves?
Sound waves & P-waves
How can Polarisation be used in the real world?
Reducing the glare of the sun/other light sources, Improving TV/Radio signals
