6. Bryophytes Flashcards
MERISTEM
Region of embryonic cells that produces new cells.
DIOECOUS/MONOECIOUS
Di = male and female organs on separate organisms, mono = same.
ARCHEGONIA
Multicellular structure in which single egg is produced.
ANTHERIDIA
Multi or unicellular structure that produces sperm.
MATROTROPHY
Pertaining to a form of nutrition provided by the maternal gametophyte.
PROTONEMA
The first stage in development of the gametophyte of mosses and some liverworts, can be filamentous or plate like.
PLACENTA
Transfer cells with highly branched cell wall ingrowth.
GAMETOPHORE
Fertile stalk that bears gametophores.
PEAT
Accumulation/compression of sphagnum mosses in cold/wet places, stores large amounts of non-CO2 Carbon.
OPERCULUM
Lid of the sporangium in mosses.
HADROM
Central stand of water-conducting cells found in the axes of some moss gametophytes or sporophytes.
LEPTOM
Food conducting tissue consisting of leptoids; surrounds the hadrom in the axes of some sporophytes or gametophytes.
