5th Six Weeks Flashcards
Percent yield
Refers to the efficiency of a chemical reaction; defined as the actual yield/theoretical yield * 100
Mole to mole conversion
Mole-to-mole conversions can be facilitated by using conversion factors found in the balanced equation for the reaction of interest.
Theoretical yield
The amount of product that could possibly be produced in a given reaction, calculated according to the starting amount of the limiting reagent
Actual yield
The amount of product actually obtained in a chemical reaction
Limiting reagent
Limiting Reactant - The reactant in a chemical reaction that limits the amount of product that can be formed. The reaction will stop when all of the limiting reactant is consumed.
Excess reagent
Excess Reactant - The reactant in a chemical reaction that remains when a reaction stops when the limiting reactant is completely consumed.
Stoichiometry
the calculation of the quantities of chemical elements or compounds involved in chemical reactions.
Mass Stoichiometry
You are given the mass of one substance and asked the find the mass of another substance
What do coefficients do in balanced equations?
The coefficients in balanced equations show how the moles of the substances are related.
Mass to mass conversion
Write a balanced equation for the reaction. Write the given mass on a factor-label form. Convert mass of reactant to moles of reactant. Convert moles of reactant to moles of product. Convert moles of product to grams of product.
Dimensional analysis
Dimensional Analysis (also called Factor-Label Method or the Unit Factor Method) is a problem-solving method that uses the fact that any number or expression can be multiplied by one without changing its value. It is a useful technique.
Grams to moles
The compound’s molar mass is necessary when converting from grams to moles. For a single element, the molar mass is equivalent to its atomic weight multiplied by the molar mass constant (1 g/mol). For a compound, the molar mass is the sum of the atomic weights of each element in the compound multiplied by the molar mass constant. After the molar mass is determined, dimensional analysis can be used to convert from grams to moles.
Percent volume
v/v % = [(volume of solute)/(volume of solution)] x 100
Mass Percent
Mass of solute/mass of solution * 100
Mass-volume percent concentration
Mass of solute/volume of solution * 100
