Postmodernists-magazines aimed at men & in depictions of men in media focus on mens vulnerable side, encouraging them to get in touch with their emotions- This is the oncept of the new man & media construct of the metrosexual (media focusing on fashion, appearance & less traditional masculine traits)

Connell-Hegemonic masculinity-The idea that there is a particualr view of masculinity of being seen as a ‘real man’ that is dominat in western culture

This view includes both gender heirarchy ( with real men above women in hierarchy) & hierarchy amongst men: boys should aspire to become alpha males- this view is centured on phsical strength,competitiveness & success which is shaped by the media

although magazines have encourasgedf men to take interest in fashion & appearance- there is still emphasis on traditional masculinity & objectification & sexualisation of women in media aimed at men
