1. The New Media Flashcards
What are the new media?
The New media are types of media that use digital technology (e.g. social media & use of internet) opposed to traditional forms of media (newspapers, magazines)
Outline 6 characteristics that distinguish New media fro Old media
Social Media Networks are examples of New Media which are:
Digital,
interactive,
hyper-textual,
Cultural globalisation
virtual
simulation.
Outline how digital media relates to new media
Qualitative information has today become ‘digitalised’.
Digitalisation allows near instant transmission of information via cable and satellite.
Digitalisation has resulted in ‘technological convergence’,
mobile devices perform a variety of functions – not only reading & text , but also searching for info, shopping and using GPS functions.
‘technological convergence’, - the convergence of different forms of info (text, audio and visual) into one single ‘system
Outline how new media is interactive
New media formats facilitate more interaction than old media , audience are able to engage e.g being able to tweet a live TV programme
New Media (2 way system) allows consumers & users to get more involved. two way form of communication than old media.
Increased interactivity in acts such as liking a Facebook post or commenting on news piece or blog.
New Media has fostered a more participatory culture, with more people involved & roles between consumer & producer of media content becoming ever more blurred!
Outline how Digital media facilitate cultural globalisation
Digital Media has also facilitated cultural globalisation – we now interact more globally and via virtual networks of people rather than locally.
These networks allow for ‘collective intelligence’ to increase – they allow us to pool our resources e easily and to draw on a wider range of sources of info
Evaluate the view that New media is revolutionary
.- Cornford & Robins (1999) argued that new media developments are evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. argue interactivity was present in older media forms, such as newspapers featuring letters pages , suggesting new technology built on existing technology rather than being revolutionary
- Boyle & Haynes(2004) argued new media added to what was available from old media rather than replacing it , can still watch television in old way they note that only main change in terms of new media is speed of communication
- New media does not address inequalities in access to it, new media is used more frequently by young people than older people , leading to digital underclass because important tasks like banking , shopping are done online.
