Different types of leaders
- Designated
- Emergent
- Transactional
- Servant Leader
- Designated - selected by group members or an outside authority
- Emergent - gradually achieve leadership by interacting with group members and contributing to the achievement of the group goal
- Transactional- focuses on the role of supervisor, organization, and group performance
- Servant Leader- shares power, what’s the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible
Definition of leadership
The ability to make strategic decisions and use communication affectedly to mobilize group members.
The Role of power
- Position vs. personal
Position – depends on a members job for status
Personal – stems from a member of individual character, competencies, and earned status
Trait Leadership Theory
Identify and prescribe individual characteristics and behaviors needed for effective leadership.
Styles Leadership Theory
Autocratic- seek power and authority by controlling
Democratic- promote the interests of group members and practice social equality.
Laissez-faire- The group take charge of all decisions and actions.
Collective- everyone take part
Situational Leadership
a) Task- motivated leaders
b) Relationship- motivated leaders

b) Relationship - turned about relationships
Functional Leadership Theory
Focuses on what a leader does to help the group achieve it’s common goal.
Leadership is not the sole responsibility of the leader, it is a job, not a person
Functional leadership theory focuses on how to lead instead of who is the leader.
The 5M Model of Leadership Effectiveness
Model leadership – project an image of confidence, competence, trustworthiness, and optimism
Motivate members – provide the inspiration, incentives, and reasons that move group members to work together to achieve a goal.
Manage group process – managing group process may be the most important function of leadership. If the group is disorganized, lacks sufficient information, or is unable to make decisions, their group cannot be effective
Organize – understand and adapt to members – help solve task related problems – monitor and intervene to improve grip performance
Make decisions – make appropriate, timely, and responsible decision.
Mentor members – help other members move ahead, tutor, advice, counsel
Gender & Leadership
Women are less likely to be pre-selected as leaders, and the same leadership behavior is often evaluated more positively went attributed to a male
Can be perceived as unladylike
Culture & Leadership
know the different cultural patterns
Multicultural leaders relate effectively two and motivate people across race, gender, age, social attitudes, and lifestyles
Negative stereotypes about leaders from my Nordie groups make it more difficult for such numbers to gain leadership positions
