5.5 Transition Metals Flashcards
Transition Metal
A transition metal forms at least one stable ion with a partially filled d sub-shell.
D-Block element
An element which has an atom with its highest energy level electron in a d sub-shell.
Complex
A central metal atom or ion with ligands bonded by co-ordinate bonds.
Ligand
The name given to any ion or molecule with a lone pair of electrons which forms a co-ordinate bond with a central metal atom or ion in a complex.
Monodentate Ligand
A monodentate ligand uses only one lone pair of electrons to form a co-ordinate bond with a central metal atom or ion in a complex.
Bidentate Ligand
A bidentate ligand uses two lone pairs of electrons to form two co-ordinate bonds with a central metal atom or ion in a complex.
Polydentate/Chelating Liquid
A polydentate liquid uses many (more than one) lone pairs of electrons to form more than two co-ordinate bonds with a central metal atom or ion in a complex.
Co-ordination Number
The co-ordination number of a complex is the number of co-ordinate bonds from ligands to the central atom or ion.
