4.3 Kinetics Flashcards
Rate of Reaction
the change of the concentration (amount) of a reactant or product with respect to time.
Activation Energy
The minimum kinetic energy that the colliding molecules must have for the reaction to be successful and result in the formation of molecules.
Rate Constant, K
The proportionality constant which links the rate of reaction to the concentrations in the rate equation.
Order of Reaction
The order of reaction with respect to a given reactant, is the power to which its concentration terms are raised in the rate equation.
Rate Determining Step
The slowest step in a reaction meachanism.
Catalyst
A substancewhich alters the the speed of a reaction whilst remainiong unchanged chemically and unchanged in mass by the end of the reaction.
Nucleophile
An ion or molecule with a lone pair of electrons which attacks reigons of low electron density.
Substitution Reaction
A reaction where an atom or group of atoms in a molecule is replaced by another atom or group of atoms.
