4.6 Isomerism Flashcards
Isomerism
When 2 or more compounds have the same molecular formula but different arrangements of atoms.
Structural Isomerism
When 2 or more compounds have the same molecular formula, but different structural formula.
Stereoisomerism
When 2 or more atoms have the same molecular formula and the same structural formula but different 3D spatial arrangement of their bonds.
Asymmetric (Chiral) Centre
An atom that is attached to 4 different atoms or groups of atoms.
Optically Active
An optically active compound is able to rotate the plane of plane polarised light.
Racemic Mixture
A mixture containing equal amounts (50:50) of two optical isomers.
Plane Polarised Monochromatic Light
Light in which the vibrations are all in one plane.
Optical Isomers
Two compounds that exist as non-superimposable mirror images.
