4.9 Derivitaves of the Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
Monoester
An ester that contains only 1 ester group.
Triglycerides
Triesters of long chain carboxylic acids (fatty acids) and propne-1,2,3-triol (glycreol).
(They occur naturally as fats and oils).
Hydrogenation
The addition of a hydrogen molecule across a C=C bond.
Hydrolysis
The reaction of an ion or molecule with water, resulting in the species splitting.
Saponification
Alkaline hydrolysis.
Polyunsaturated Molecule
A compound that contains more than one C=C bond.
Transesterification
A reaction where the alkyl group of an ester is exchanged with the alkyl group of an alcohol.
Biodiesel
A fuel, similar to diesel, which is made from vegetabe sources eg. the reaction of rapeseed oil with methanol.
