54. Surah Qamr

Question 1

V1: اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ

Answer 1

The Hour has come near

Question 2

V1: وَانشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ

Answer 2

and the moon has split [in two].

Question 3

V2: وَإِن يَرَوْا آيَةً

Answer 3

And if they see a miracle/Yet, whenever they see a sign

Question 4

V2: يُعْرِضُوا

Answer 4

They turn away

Question 5

V2: سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ

Answer 5

saying, “Same old magic!”/”Passing magic.”

Question 6

V3: وَكَذَّبُوا

Answer 6

And they denied/They rejected ˹the truth˺

Question 7

V3: وَاتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ ۚ

Answer 7

And followed their inclinations/and followed their own desires

Question 8

V3: وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ

Answer 8

But for every matter is a [time of] settlement/and every matter will be settled

Question 9

V4: وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُم

Answer 9

And there has already come to them/ that have already come to them

Question 10

V4: مِّنَ الْأَنبَاءِ

Answer 10

of information/even though the stories ˹of destroyed nations˺

Question 11

V4: مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ

Answer 11

that in which there is deterrence (afskrækkelse)/are a sufficient deterrent (afskrækkelse)

Question 12

V5: حِكْمَةٌ بَالِغَةٌ ۖ

Answer 12

Extensive wisdom / ˹This Quran is˺ profound ˹in˺ wisdom

Question 13

V5: فَمَا تُغْنِ النُّذُرُ

Answer 13

..but warning does not avail [them]./but warnings are of no benefit ˹to them˺.

Question 14

V6: فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ

Answer 14

So leave them, [O Muhammad]/So turn away from them ˹O Prophet

Question 15

V6: يَوْمَ يَدْعُ الدَّاعِ

Answer 15

The Day the Caller calls/And wait for the Day ˹when˺ the caller1 will summon ˹them˺

Question 16

V6: إِلَىٰ شَيْءٍ نُّكُرٍ

Answer 16

to something forbidding/for something horrifying

Question 17

V7: يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ

Answer 17

they will emerge from the graves

Question 18

V7: كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌ

Answer 18

as if they were locusts spreading,

“Som om de var græshopper, der spreder sig.”

Question 19

V7: خُشَّعًا أَبْصَارُهُمْ

Answer 19

Their eyes humbled,

Question 20

V8: مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى الدَّاعِ ۖ

Answer 20

Racing ahead toward the Caller.

Question 21

V8: يَقُولُ الْكَافِرُونَ

Answer 21

The disbelievers will say,

Question 22

V8: هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ

Answer 22

“This is a difficult Day.”

Question 23

V9: كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ

Answer 23

The people of Noah denied before them

Question 24

V9: وَقَالُوا مَجْنُونٌ وَازْدُجِرَ

Answer 24

and said, “A madman,” and he was repelled.

Question 25

V9: فَكَذَّبُوا عَبْدَنَا

Answer 25

and they denied Our servant

Question 26

V10: فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ

Answer 26

So he invoked his Lord

Question 27

V10: أَنِّي مَغْلُوبٌ فَانتَصِرْ

Answer 27

“Indeed, I am overpowered, so help.”

Question 28

V11: فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ

Answer 28

Then We opened the gates of the heaven

Question 29

V11: بِمَاءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ ‎﴿١١﴾‏

Answer 29

with rain pouring down
