5.3 Conditional Probability and the Multiplication Rule Flashcards
Conditional Probability
The conditional probability of an event B, given an event A, is denoted P(B |A). P(B|A) is the probability that B occurs, under the assumption that A occurs. We read P(B|A) as “the probability of B, given A.”
Unconditional Probability
A probability that is computed without knowledge of additional information.

The General Multiplication Rule

Independent / Dependent Events
Two events are independent if the occurence of one does not affect the probability that the other event occurs.
If two events are not independent, we say they are dependant.
