1.1-Sampling Flashcards
Statistics
The study of procedures for collecting, describing, and drawing conclusions from information.
Population
The entire collection of individuals about which information is sought.
Sample
A subset of population, containing the individuals that are actually observed.
Simple Random Sample
A sample chosen by a method in which each collection of n population items is equally likely to make up the sample, just as in a lottery.
Sample of Convenience
A sample that is not drawn by a well-defined random method.
Cluster Sampling
Divides the population into groups. Then a random sample of groups are selected, and everyone in each of these groups is sampled.
Stratified Sampling
Divides the population into groups that have something in common. Then a simple random sample is drawn from each group.
Systematic Sample
Starts by ordering the population and choosing a starting point. Then every nth individual is sampled.
Voluntary Response Sample
People in the sample population are invited to share what they think. Voluntary Samples are NEVER RELIABLE!
Statistic
A number that describes a sample.
Parameter
A number that describes a population
