CN X path in neck
Right and Left vagus nerves enter the carotid sheaths. Each descends through the neck posterolateral to the common carotid arteries
CN X branches
pharyngeal, superior laryngeal, recurrent laryngeal (right in the neck, left in the mediastinum), and the superior cardiac
CN X Functional Defecits
- Weak/hoarse voice
- Tongue movement impaired
- Dysphagia
- Loss of gag reflex
- Disruption to the thorax and abdomen
CN XI path in neck
Crosses the IJ vein where it pierces the SCM and then sends a branch down to the trapezius.
CN XI functions
Motor innervation to the SCM and the trapezius.
CN XI Functional Defecits
Diminished or absent function of the SCM and upper part of the trapezius.
CN XII path in neck
Passes between the internal carotid artery and the internal jugular vein, deep to the posterior belly of the digastric muscle.
CN XII functions
Motor control to the muscles of the tongue.
CN XII Functional Defecits
Paralyzed tongue causing difficulty swallowing, chewing and speaking.
