5.2 Superior Mesenteric Artery and Small Intestine Flashcards
Identify the following components of the Duodenum:
- Superior part
- Descending part
- Horizontal part
- Ascending part
-
Identify the following components of the Pancreas:
- Head
- Main pancreatic duct
- Major duodenal papilla
- Minor duodenal papilla
- Accessory pancreatic duct
-
Identify the Greater Omentum
-
Identify the Transverse Colon and Transverse Mesocolon
-
Identify the root of the mesentery
the oblique line of attachment of the small intestine to the posterior abdominal wall.
Identify the superior and inferior duodenal recesses
At the duodenojejunal junction look for two peritoneal recesses, often better seen in nonfixed cadavers
Identify the duodenojejunal junction
-
Identify the Jejnum
-
Identify the following components of the Ileum:
- Terminal ileum
- Plicae circularis
- Peyer’s patches
Plicae circularis:Identify the circular folds of mucosa in these regions, the plicae circularis (valves of Kerkring). These function in increasing the absorptive surface of the small intestine. Note that as you move from jejunum to ileum the plicae circulares decrease in size and number.
Peyers Patches: small to fair-sized ovoid lumps can be seen in the mucosa of the ileum. These are Peyer’s patches, large accumulations of lymphoid nodules, present only in the terminal region of this most permeable section of the small intestine.
Identify the Cecum and Appendix
-
Identify the Ileocecal junction and valve.
union of the terminal ileum with the cecum, an anatomical flaplike valve
Identify the Ileocecal recess.
-
Identify the Superior mesenteric artery and the following branches:
- Middle coloic a.
- Inferior pancreaticoduodenal a.
- Right colic a.
- Ileocolic a.
- Intestinal branches
- Vasa recta
- Marginal a.
