School counselors are required to abide by the American School Counselor Association Ethical Standards (2010). It is an attempt by the profession to standardize professional practice for the purpose of protecting students, parents, and school counselors. Professionals in schools can use the standards to improve effectiveness, avoid ethical problems and escape legal entanglements. Ultimately, the school counselor has the responsibility to determine the appropriate response for students who put their trust in the security of the counseling relationships.
