5. Transport Systems - Plants Flashcards
A leaf is made up of a collection of
specialised tissues
The pores on leaves that allow gas exchange are called
Stomata
Stomata are mainly found on the
lower surface of the leaf
The opening and closing of stomata are controlled by
Guard Cells
Leaf cells that are closely packed together and contain lots of chloroplasts are called
Palisade Mesophyll Cells
A layer that contains many air spaces is called the
Spongy Mesophyll
In plants, water is transported upwards in
Xylem Vessels
In plants, water and minerals are transported upwards in
Xylem Vessels
Xylem vessels are
hollow tubes (made of dead cells and rings of lignin)
When guard cells become Turgid,
stomata can open
When guard cells lose water and become plasmolysed,
stomata can close.
The process of water moving through a plant and evaporating via stomata is known as
Transpiration
Transpiration rate can be affected by
windspeed, humidity and temperature
A potometer is used to measure
Transpiration rate (by showing how much water is being taken in by the plant to replace losses)
Sugar is transported around plants in
Phloem Vessels
