1. Producing New Cells Flashcards
Cells are
the basic unit of life
Mitosis is
the process of cell division
Mitosis is important for
growth & repair
Cell division is controlled by the
nucleus
Cells with 2 matching sets of chromosomes are
diploid
At the start of cell division, chromosome are
long and uncoiled in the nucleus
When chromosomes copy themselves they become
two identical chromatids
During mitosis, chromosomes line up at the
equator of the cell
Spindle fibres attach to
the centromere
Chromatids are pulled apart to opposite poles by
spindle fibres
The new cells produced at the end of mitosis are called
daughter cells
Daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as
the original parent cell
Having the same chromosome complement ensure that all cells have a
full set of genetic information to grow and develop properly
Cells are specialised to allow them to
carry out different functions
Red blood cells carry
oxygen around the body
