Q

What did Yerkes and Dodson (1908) find in their factors affecting punishment study?

Give an example of why this is logical involving children’s learning.

A

Punishment effectiveness is dependent on task difficulty. An easy task requires a strong punishment whereas a difficult task only a mild punishment, and both have an optimum level of punishment strength at the top of an inverted U.

This means that for a difficult task, a moderately mild punishment will be effective, but a very mild, medium or strong punishment will not.

For an easy task, eg a child is learning to tie their show-laces, a strong punishment would not be effective,
