5 Population Dynamics Flashcards
Nectivore
Organisms which derive their energy from nectar.
What factors can be used to calculate population growth?
fertility rates, mortality rates, the populations age, and migration rates
What is carrying capacity?
The maximum population size of species that can be supported in a given environment.
Capture Mark recapture
An ecological survey technique used to measure animal populations in which individual animals are captured, marked and released. After time the population is resampled and the number of marked animals court is used to estimate population size and growth
Clumped vs uniform vs random distribution
Clumped describes populations that group together to make the most of the biotic and/or abiotic factors.
Uniform distribution is where organisms evenly spaced.
Random distribution is a distribution where organisms are spaced irregularly
What isl K-selection?
A type of population growth where initial growth may be slow, but in the long-term, more sustainable to maintain a population
What does the term r-selection mean?
A type of population growth where species quickly colonise an unstable ecosystem leading to a pattern of rapid population, increase and decrease (boom and bust) phases resulting in their eventual replacement by competitors.
What are density dependent factors?
Factors which effect populations which are exclusive to the populations density.
E.g. The grade of the density of the population, the more fail survive, or reproduce.
Examples of these factors include competition and predation
What are three different sampling techniques?
1 capture, recapture
2 quadrat
3 transect
