2 Biodiversity And Classification Flashcards
Binomial system
A system of naming organisms using two part names: genus then species
Biodiversity
-biodiversity is the variety of life that exists in the biosphere. Biodiversity includes GENES in a gene pool, SPECIES in an ecosystem, and ECOSYSTEMS in the biosphere.
What is a species
Defined as a group of organisms that is capable of interbreeding under natural circumstances to produce fertile offspring.
What are the 3 species concept
Biological
Morphological
Phylogenetic
Ecosystem
Biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem and their interactions
What are spatial scales
Used to measure biodiversity;
refers to how organisms are distributed over space.
Spatial scales can be terrestrial or aquatic.
What are temporal scales
Used to measure biodiversity; refers to how organisms are distributed over time.
Why do we classify organisms
Allows biologists to analyse information by providing a way to:
- organise information
- identify patterns and trends
- better understand relationships
Invasive species can be identified

6 family
7 genus
8 species
What is a biodiversity hotspot?
An area with at least 1500 endemic species and a large number of endangered and threatened species. Also must have lost 70% of its primary native vegetation.
What is the phylogenic species concept?
Defining species by comparing their common ancestors through genetic analysis.
What is the biological species concept?
Defining species based on whether members can interbreed and produce fertile offspring
What is the morphological species concept?
Defining species based on their physical characteristics (morphology)
