5.-Enzymes-in-Action-Peptides Flashcards
What is the structure of an amino acid?
The carbon atom of an amino acid is bonded to a hydrogen atom and three other groups.
How are amino acids joined together?
Amino acids are joined by peptide bonds which form between the carboxyl group of one amino acid and the amino group of another, resulting in a condensation reaction.
What are the four main types of amino acids based on their R groups?
The four main types are polar/hydrophilic, non-polar/hydrophobic, acidic/negatively charged R groups, and basic/positively charged R groups.
What types of amino acids are found on the external surface of a soluble blood protein?
You would expect to find polar/hydrophilic amino acids on the external surface and non-polar/hydrophobic amino acids embedded within the internal part of the molecule.
What are the three levels of protein structure?
Protein structure is described at three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary.
What do different amino acid R groups do in a protein?
Different R groups cause a polypeptide chain to fold into a particular shape and assign properties that enable the protein to carry out its function.
What are the two main forms of protein shapes?
Protein shapes come in two main forms: fibrous and globular.
What are the characteristics of fibrous proteins?
Fibrous proteins are insoluble in water and have strong, elongated structures.
What are the characteristics of globular proteins?
Globular proteins are soluble in water and have more rounded structures.
