Electrical Muscle Stimulation.
WHAT IS EMS (4)
Stimulate nerves and muscles for:
Muscle contraction and relaxation.
Pain modulation.
Soft tissue and bone healing.
Ion motion.
CONSIDERATIONS FOR EMS
Better current flow occurs through warmed, moist skin.
EMS PLACEMENTS
Over muscle belly.
WHEN TO USE EMS (5)
Pain management.
Stimulate an active contraction when the patient can’t.
Muscle strengthening.
Muscle re-education.
Reduce muscle spasm.
PARAMETERS FOR EMS (5)
Intensity: selected by the patient.
Ramp: 3-5 seconds for ramp up, 2-3 seconds for ramp down.
On/off time: Only increasing intensity when the machine is on.
Pulse frequency: Hz or pps.
Pulse duration: in microseconds.
CONTRAINDICAITONS TO EMS (4)
cardiac pacemakers
abdomen of pregnant woman
absence of sensation
over superficial metal implants
PRECAUTIONS FOR EMS (5)
obesity
decrease in sensation
skin conditions
metal
unreliable
