PHYSICAL AGENTS
Modalities used in rehabilitation to facilitate recovery.
CATEGORIES OF PHYSICAL AGENTS
Thermal agents.
Mechanical agents.
Electromagnetic agents.
THERMAL AGENTS
Transfer energy to a patient to increase/ decrease tissue temperature.
Ex: hot packs, ice packs, ultrasound, diathermy, radiation, and hydrotherapy.
MECHANICAL AGENTS
Apply force to increase/ decrease pressure on the body.
Ex: hydrotherapy, traction, compression, and ultrasound.
ELECTROMAGNETIC AGENTS.
Apply energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation/ electrical current.
Ex: UV radiation, infrared radiation, laser, diathermy, and electrical current.
GOALS OF PHYSICAL AGENTS
Decrease pain.
Increase wound repair.
Increase tissue repair.
OTHER MODALITIES USED WITH PHYSICAL AGENTS
Therapeutic exercise.
Manual therapy techniques.
Medications.
Rest.
RESPONSE OF THE BODY FROM PHYSICAL AGENTS
