SHORTWAVE DIATHERMY
Application of shortwave frequency to produce heating in tissues.
Produces an electromagnetic field which creates heat in tissues.
EFFECTS OF SWD
Thermal: increase in metabolism, vasodilation, increased sweat activity, decreased muscle spasm.
Non-thermal: stimulation of sensory nerve.
Clinical indications: control of pain, edema, soft tissue, nerve, and bone healing.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
All contraindications as discussed with heating.
Implanted neural stimulators.
Metal implants.
Malignancy.
Pregnancy.
Eyes.
Reproductive organs.
Active epiphyses.
PRECAUTIONS
Near electronic equipment.
Obese patients.
Other internal devices (IUD).
ADVERSES EFFECTS
Burns.
Pain.
Electrical shock.
