5&6. Oestology Of The Pelvis Flashcards
What bones make up the pelvic girdle
Hip bones
Sacrum
What do the hip bones articulate with & what is each joint called
Sacrum: sacroiliac joint
Each other: public symphysis
What are the differences between the genecoid (female) & android (male) pelvis
Male: Thick & heavy Greater pelvis deep Lesser pelvis narrow & deep Pelvic inlet heart shaped & narrow Pelvic outlet smaller Pubic arch narrow, supra pubic angle 80 degrees Obturator foramen oval Acetabulum small Greater static notch almost 90 degrees
What are the bony landmarks of the pelvic inlet
Promontory & ala of sacrum posteriorly
Right & left linda terminalis anteriorly
What 3 parameters of the pelvic inlet are assessed clinically
anatomic conjugate:
From sacral promontory to superior border of pubic symphysis
Obstetric conjugate:
From sacral promontory to midpoint of pubic symphysis (min diameter of canal)
Diagonal conjugate:
From sacral promontory to inferior border of public symphysis
What are the bony landmarks of the pelvic outlet
Pubic arch anteriorly
Ischial tuberosities laterally
Inferior margin of sacrotuberous ligament posterolaterally
Tip of coccyx posteriorly
Describe the spaces of the greater (false) & lesser (true) pelvis
Why are they significant
Greater:
No obstetric significance
Superior to pelvic inlet
Occupied by abdominal viscera
Lesser:
Major obs & gynae significance
Includes
Bony canal - solid, immovable, btw pelvic inlet & outlet
Pelvic surfaces of hip bones, sacrum, coccyx
Describe the areas of the female bony pelvis that are assessed clinically
Pelvic inlet: Anteroposterior diameter (obstetric & diagonal conjugate)
Mid-pelvis:
Straight side walls, bispinosus diameter
Pelvic outlet:
Infrapubic angle
Distance btw ischial tuberosities
Describe a ‘good’ pelvis for childbirth
Round inlet Straight side walls Ischial spines not too prominent Well rounded greater siatic notch Well curved sacrum Sub pubic arch >90 degrees
What are the 2 main ligaments of the pelvis
Sacrospinosus
Sacrotuberous
What 3 bones make up the pelvis
Ilium
Ischium
Pubis
