What are the Patrol Officer’s responsibilities?

  1. Responds to the scene and confers with the senior representative or key employee of the establishment. The representative of the establishment must make the following decisions: whether to conduct a search (using establishment personnel); whether to evacuate during a search; if further action should be taken if no device or suspected device is found; and if the area is safe or free of explosives. LVMPD personnel will not make these decisions or judgments. On any specific threat where the senior representative or key employee of an establishment is willing to evacuate the premises and conduct a search, the Explosive Detection Dog (EDD) can be deployed to provide a more comprehensive search. Examples of such searches could be buildings, aircrafts or vehicles (see 5/213.03).
  2. Update the event through the use of the Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) or phone line. Personnel are cautioned against radio transmissions in the vicinity of a device as it could cause detonation. Land lines should be used when possible.
  3. Requests ARMOR or other support units if required. (Outlined in Located Explosive Device section.)
  4. Takes incident report and, if appropriate, completes a brief Officer’s Report.
