Why did you interpret the offer of a coffee as a bribe?
- I was aware a coffee had been used as slang for a bribe previously.
- It was the context of the situation where the interested party was asking what I could do for him in relation to the rent and planning and then he made a gesture with his hands.
Why is it not okay to accept a bribe?
It is unlawful under the Bribery Act 2010 to accept a bribe.
How did you explain to the potential tenant you could not accept the gesture?
I politely refused and explained I had a duty to my client to obtain the best rent, and that I have a duty to uphold the highest RICS standards to Act with Integrity and Act in a Way that Promotes Trust in the Profession
What is consequence of a firm not having anti bribery policies in place?
The firm will become liable for corrupt acts committed by the persons acting on behalf of the company.
What is the definition of a bribe?
The act of giving something with the expectation of a change in behaviour.
