Explanation to the 4th Commandment
We should fear and love God that we do not dishonor or anger our parents and others in authority, but honor, serve, and obey them, and give them love and respect
Who are the people who God wants us to honor?
God wants us to honor those in authority, especially those in our homes, our churches, and our government
Why do these people have authority over us?
They have this authority because God placed them over us as his representatives.
What blessing does God give us through his representatives in our churches?
Through his representatives in our churches, God gives us the blessing of instruction in his saving word. (care of our souls)
What blessing does God give us through his representatives in our government?
Through his representatives in our government, God gives us his blessing of law and order. (care of our bodies)
Why does God call special attention in this commandment to our parents as his representatives?
God calls special attention to our parents because through them he gives us many blessings: our daily needs such as food, clothing, and shelter; instruction in his Words; guidance for life; and loving concern. ( care of body and souls)
How does God emphasize that he wants to bless us through his representatives?
God emphasizes that he wants to bless us through his representatives by adding a promise to the fourth commandment.
