4b- economic development unintentionally causing change Flashcards
what economic activity is happening in Pikiri and why
sand mining at Pikiri to make concrete and glass for buildings. Its close Aukland - cheaper to transport and reduces carbon. Aukland has 1/3 of NZ population and 35% of GDP.
beach profile flattened
unintentional impacts on the Mangarahwi spit
Less sediment is moved to the spit by LSD due to there being less sediment available down the coast- 28m eroded from the spit, 30 years ago the spit breached which led to flooding and the beach being eroded further
unintentional impacts on Te Arai point and pakiri
this is the main sand mining area, the reduced sediment has lead to increasing wave energy as it doesnt slow the waves down-
sand is still extracted from pakiri, - 75,000 m3 per year
dunes are retreating making the beach profile flatter.
Reduced sediment starves landforms to the north so less sediment goes to the spit
