3b- Submergent landscapes Flashcards
how are Fjords formed and what geomorphic processes are affecting it
submerged glacial valleys, The glaciers scarred valleys by plucking and abrasion creating deep u shaped valleys, when the glaciers melted the sea level rise and flooded the valley leaving behind narrow steep and deep valleys.
Geomorphic processes- coastal erosion will widen it. Steep valley sides are prone to rock fall after weathering- mass movement events
how are Rias formed and what geomorphic processes are affecting it
in lowland coastal areas river form floodplains which are flat and wide and made of weak deposits deposited due to flocculation. as sea levels rose they are flooded. Forms Rias which are wide but shallow
Geomorphic processes- coastal erosion at sea level. Deposition occurs due to the flocculation of river sediments where rivers meet the sea.
how are Shingle Beaches formed and what geomorphic processes are affecting it
long beaches with a large quantity of sediment (more than could be provided by cliff erosion) The sediment has been brought from offshore as sea levels rose during Flandrian transgression. The sediment was originally deposited by glaciers
Geomorphic processes- constructive waves will make bigger beaches but destructive waves may take sediment away. LSD reworks the sediment and makes the beach higher at one end that the other- chisel beach tombolo is 6m higher at one end
